Here are the proposed nature-based solutions to your problem!

Legend:

Green - Evidence of high effectiveness of nature-based solutions is based on specific research and/or inferred from active case study analysis across the Mediterranean, so there is a high level of confidence that this nature-based solution type can address the problem you have identified.

Amber - Evidence of effectiveness of nature-based solutions to address the problem you have identified is not as strong and/or is inferred from a low number of active case study analysis across the Mediterranean, so more research is needed to build up the evidence base.

Red - Evidence of effectiveness of nature-based solutions to address the problem you have identified is either low and/or there are few or no case studies in the ReNature compendium that support the use of this nature-based solution type across the Mediterranean, indicating an urgent need for more research.

Interventions in public spaces

Find examples for Interventions in public spaces from the ReNature Compendium.

Co-benefits associated with this NbS

These are actions that are implemented within a city’s public space.

NBS included in this category include urban parks, urban gardens (including allotment gardens), urban forests (including pocket forests), urban farms, urban orchards, urban meadows, green urban furniture, and the renaturing of abandoned or post-industrial sites such as brownfield sites.

Building-scale interventions

Find examples for Building-scale interventions from the ReNature Compendium.

Co-benefits associated with this NbS

Building-scale interventions are greening actions on the rooftops or facades of buildings or those located within the open-space of buildings. Existing buildings may be retrofitted to include these interventions, or the interventions may be incorporated at the building’s planning and design phase.

NBS included in this category include, vertical greening systems (green façades and living walls), green roofs (extensive green roofs, intensive green roofs and semi-intensive green roofs), and vegetated pergolas.

Interventions in waterbodies and drainage systems

Find examples for Interventions in waterbodies and drainage systems from the ReNature Compendium.

Co-benefits associated with this NbS

These interventions involve the renaturing and recovery of river courses and wetlands, ponds and lakes. The focus of these actions is to re-establish the hydrological conditions, vegetation, and soils with the aim of providing water flow regulation, increased retention capacity and increased ecosystem service provision.

NBS included in this category include the restoration and management of ponds and lakes, the renaturalization of rivers and streams, the preservation of floodplains and/or reconnecting them to rivers, and sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDs).

Interventions in linear transport infrastructures

Find examples for Interventions in linear transport infrastructures from the ReNature Compendium.

Co-benefits associated with this NbS

These interventions involve the planting of vegetation along high capacity infrastructure (i.e. motorways, railways etc.), as well as ‘soft’ infrastructure (i.e. streets, tramlines etc.).

Actions include street tree planting programmes, green strips, and green tram tracks.

Interventions in natural areas and land management

Find examples for Interventions in natural areas and land management from the ReNature Compendium.

Co-benefits associated with this NbS

This category includes actions taken to protect and/or restore existing natural/ protected ecosystems, such as those contained within the Natura 2000 protected areas network. These actions are intended to maintain (or enhance) the delivery of ecosystem services both within and outside of the protected ecosystem. Actions may also involve the development and implementation of management plans that sustain multifunctional ecosystems and landscapes. These plans must enhance the delivery of ecosystem services relative to what would be achieved if a more conventional approach was to be used.

Actions include the protection and/or restoration of natural protected ecosystems (e.g. Natura2000 sites, mangroves, saltmarshes), agricultural landscape management plans, coastal landscape management plans, and urban greenspace management plans.

Ecological education and awareness raising-related interventions

Find examples for Ecological education and awareness raising-related interventions from the ReNature Compendium.

Co-benefits associated with this NbS

These interventions are specifically designed to increase stakeholders’ or citizens’ awareness and knowledge of issues related to biodiversity, and the environment.

Actions include ecological festivals, and training events such as workshops and masterclasses.
